Nebraska agricultural groups are divided over LB 227, legislation intended to strengthen the state’s Right to Farm Law. While the Nebraska Cattlemen and Farm Bureau back the measure, the Center for Rural Affairs and Grassroots Community Resolve oppose it. Center for Rural Affairs Policy Director Jonathan Hladik says LB 227 takes away private property rights from various rural residents.
He says backers of the bill claim the opponents are against agriculture, which isn’t true.
Hladik says the bill’s proponents are claiming large agricultural operations need protection against nuisance lawsuits. However, the measure actually takes protections away from everyone else living in rural Nebraska.
LB 227 is on select file and could come up for legislative debate as early as Thursday.
