Rural, Non Rural and school officials have formed a coalition working in three ways to achieve tax relief in Nebraska. Coalition Steering Committee Chairman John Hansen, President of the State Farmers Union says they’re putting a petition together combining property tax relief with income tax relief. He says they’re also working with State Senators on possible legislation and a Constitutional amendment. Hansen says their group wants schools properly funded and tax relief achieved.

He says the state’s present tax system is so messed up, that many Nebraska school districts don’t get any funding from the state aid formula.

Hansen says they have two routes they can follow that will let voters decide how to fund schools and achieve tax relief. One is through an initiative petition and the other is through a Constitutional Amendment.

He says if they go the petition route it’ll take 85,000 signatures to be submitted to the Nebraska Secretary of State by July of 2018 to get on the ballot in November.
