Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts has vetoed a bill that would have increased the state gas tax by six cents over the next four years.
Rickets vetoed the bill just hours after it was passed in the Unicameral. Ricketts says the legislature hasn’t explored alternative means to pay for road and bridge repair.
But the sponsor of the bill, Senator Jim Smith of Papillion, says state revenue can’t keep up with infrastructure needs. Though he only had 26 votes on final reading, Smith believes he will get the 30 needed to override the veto.
Smith will file an override motion on Tuesday.
