Preliminary approval has been given by the Nebraska legislature to a six-cent increase in the state gas tax.
Governor Pete Ricketts opposes the increase. He plans to bring in a new director of roads and wants him to examine the roads and bridges budget before deciding to increase the tax.
Ricketts says it’s too early to consider hiking the gas tax.
The increase would raise an extra $19 Million dollars a year, bringing the total generated by the gas tax annually to $76 Million dollars.
