The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency says communities are working with the federal government to secure grants so Nebraskans can have safe rooms built in their homes. Mary Baker, the hazard mitigation officer at NEMA, says the costs of safe rooms are varied.
Baker says some people might be concerned about becoming trapped, should structural debris or a tree fall in front of the door.
Safe rooms are built to withstand almost any kind of threat or disaster, including winds up to 250 miles an hour. Larger safe rooms placed in schools, for example, can also be designed as anti-terrorism bunkers for active shooter situations.
