The USDA Farm Service Agency in Nebraska has announced a new Conservation Reserve Program. The Migratory SAFE program or State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement gives incentives to producers to take land out of production to benefit wildlife. Nebraska Farm Bureau Senior Economist Jay Rempe says this new program is focused on wetlands.
He says the program provides farmers incentives at a time when they’re facing economic pressures.
Rempe says CRP has been hampered by a cap that will be part of the discussion in the next farm bill. Meanwhile, he says having the Migratory SAFE program geared towards Nebraska’s producers brings many benefits.
Rempe says the Migratory SAFE program is a conservation reserve program, so the land isn’t going into permanent easements. He says it will also help increase wildlife habitat.
