The Nebraska Farmers Union wants State Senators to pass more property tax relief to build on what was accomplished last session. This week the Revenue Committee heard a pair of relief bills, one supported by Governor Pete Ricketts and one offered by Senator Tom Briese of Albion. Briese’s measure is a constitutional amendment to limit property taxes and make education funding a state priority. Nebraska Farmers Union President John Hansen says the problem with Briese’s and the Governor’s bills is that it involves putting lids on which don’t always work.
He says putting lids on property taxes doesn’t solve the structural tax problem the state is facing.
Hansen says his group is working with legislators on some special needs education funding that would help ease pressure on property taxes.
Hansen says while there was property tax relief progress last session more is needed this year to ease that burden and still properly fund education.
