Nebraska Farm Bureau officials are concerned about retaliation against U.S. agricultural commodities or a possible trade war with Mexico if the U.S. places tariffs on Mexican imports. The Trump administration recently talked about invoking up to a 20-percent tariff on imports from Mexico, but has now backed off that specific proposal. Farm Bureau National Affairs Coordinator Jordan Dux says Mexico and Canada are two of the most important trading partners for Nebraska and the U.S. and any trade disruption with them could have dire economic consequences.
He says there is cause for concern when tariffs are mentioned regarding any trading partner.
Dux says there’s a fine line between being tough with countries on trade and being able to achieve a positive flow of goods.
The original idea of a 20-percent tariff on Mexico imports was a way to help pay for a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico that could cost billions of dollars.
