According to the latest USDA weekly crop progress report, Nebraska farmers has planted 39 percent of the state’s corn crop and 28 percent of the soybean crop. Frank Hochstein farms in northern Nebraska along Highway 81, and on Tuesday evening was planting corn on a field equipped with an irrigation unit. Hochstein says despite the recent cool soils and conditions he started his planting on April 22nd which he says is normal schedule and says since the rains of last week, planting conditions have greatly improved.
Hockstein says he prefers to plant a longer season hybrid as he likes to have a higher moisture level corn at harvest time for his feedlot market cattle. There have been reports of crop protection products being in short supply due in part to the supply chain issues, but Hockstein says he was fortunate as he had no problems with obtaining his crop protection products.
Hockstein compares this year’s planting conditions with last year.
Last year at this time, Hockstein says he had already finished with his planting. The Nebraska farmer believes he will finish his planting duties sometime next week.
