The U.S. State Department has released a report that says the new planned route for the Keystone XL oil pipeline through Nebraska would not have a major impact on the state’s water, land or wildlife. Neligh farmer Art Tanderup whose property lies on the pipeline’s proposed pathway says the report was written by bureaucrats in an office far away from Nebraska who don’t know the land or how it would be impacted by the tar sands project.
He says comments are being taken on the project and he and others will be filing their concerns.
Tanderup who’s a plaintiff in the Nebraska lawsuit challenging the Keystone XL project says he’s worried the pipeline will leak and contaminate local groundwater. He says the Elkhorn river which drains down to the Missouri River near Omaha is susceptible to any possible oil spills.
Oral arguments in the lawsuit are scheduled in October at the earliest and a decision won’t come down until months later.
