Voters in 15 Nebraska counties served by Southeast Community College overwhelmingly defeated a $369 million dollar bond issue in Tuesday’s election. Nebraska Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson says the high rate of property taxes in the state and the effect passage of that measure would have on property taxes led to its defeat.

He says the vote No 369 coalition Farm Bureau was a part of isn’t against education but believes more serious consideration needs to be given as to how its funded.

Nelson is hoping the bond issue vote will give impetus to getting state lawmakers to approve more property tax relief during the next session of the Unicameral.

Over 60 percent of voters cast ballots opposing the bond measure.
