Nebraska Farm Groups Disappointed With Lack of Property Tax Relief

Several Nebraska agriculture groups are disappointed state Senators failed to agree on a measure to provide property tax relief this session. The State Cattlemen Association made it one of their priority issues. Vice President of Legislative Affairs Laura Field says 12 Senators have sent a request to the Secretary of State to ask for a special session to deal with the problem.

It would take a two-thirds vote of state Senators to call for a special session which will be a tough lift. Nebraska Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson says his group was also disappointed property tax relief didn’t pass, and they’ll now direct their attention to a petition drive so voters can weigh in on the issue.

Center for Rural Affairs Policy Associate Jordan Rasmussen says their group wanted property tax relief passed but doesn’t think the ballot issue is a good idea because there’ s no way to pay for it.

Many state senators favored property tax relief but couldn’t agree on the method to achieve it.
