One Nebraska Agriculture group wants the present beef check off program reformed but stopped short of backing a second program being advocated by Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack. Nebraska Farmers Union President John Hansen says there are many problems with the current program including that the one check off vendor, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association gets 93 percent of check off dollars.
Hansen says the decision regarding the second beef check off is really a separate issue.
Hansen says whatever check off program is eventually approved must be administered efficiently and properly.
While Hansen’s group wants beef check off reform, the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association wants to leave the present program intact and has written the Ag Secretary opposing the second program.
