The office of the U.S. Trade Representative has sent the draft legal document for the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal to Congress. What the timeline will be for Congressional consideration or possible approval is still unknown. Nebraska Farm Bureau National Affairs Coordinator Jordan Dux says getting it passed is their chief priority despite expected tough sledding.
He says the U.S. continues to lose out on needed markets as long as Congress fails to act on the pact.
Dux says neither agriculture nor the entire U.S. economy can afford to lose out on TPP especially given the current financial downturn.
It isn’t known if Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will allow the agreement to come up for debate during the lame duck session. Despite the President pushing it, there is opposition from both sides of the aisle in Congress.
