The Senate may be looking at pushing through a mandatory biotech labeling bill in the form of mandatory disclosure. That is favored by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack requiring the use of smart labels and banning state labeling laws. Nebraska Farm Bureau National Affairs Coordinator Jordan Dux says they don’t support that and are still backing the voluntary labeling measure.

Ag Secretary Vilsack says President Obama would sign the mandatory disclosure bill. Dux says it remains to be seen if the President would go along with the voluntary measure.

The Senate appears likely to attempt passing a biotech labeling bill before the Easter Recess that starts March 18. Dux says his group is hoping that happens.

Dux says it’s critical that a national measure be passed so state laws don’t take effect that would be costly and confusing for consumers.
