Nebraska Farm Bureau members are working to convince State Senators to vote for an override of the Governor’s Veto on the gas tax increase legislation. Farm Bureau’s Vice President of Government Relations Jay Rempe says the funding is necessary to shore up the state’s roads and bridges which have been deteriorating and need the upkeep to provide a strong system for getting ag commodities to market.
Rempe says there aren’t very many options to fund roads and bridges other than hiking the gas tax which calls for six cents over four years. He says without the gas tax increase, it’ll mean more pressure on property taxes to help pay for infrastructure.
Rempe says the issue has been studied in the past and now funding is needed to solve the problem.
The gas tax increase approved by the Unicameral received 26 votes, so Rempe and sponsor Senator Smith think they can get the necessary votes to override.
