The Nebraska Farm Bureau has sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General William Barr asking him to have the U.S. Justice Department conduct a full investigation into potential manipulation of the cattle markets. Farm Bureau’s Director of National Affairs Jordan Dux says they want a full look at the discrepancy between what cattle producers are being paid versus what packers are getting for the animals.

He says they’re working with cattle producers to find fundamental solutions to the market price problem and share that with the Justice Department and the USDA.

Dux says one of the concerns that’s come up that’s need close investigation is the problem of captive supply and packers owning that livestock thus causing a non competitive market situation.

Dux says they want to see the Justice Department coordinate its efforts with the USDA which began an investigation earlier into the cattle market dilemma and has now expanded that.
