Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer has introduced the Farmers Undertake Environmental Land Stewardship or FUELS Act in the Senate. Nebraska Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson says his group backs the bill and that it corrects problems brought about by the EPA’s spill control and counter measure rules.

He says the SPCC rules were meant to be applied to large fuel storage facilities such as oil refineries and not meant for farms and ranches. Nelson says Fischer’s bill would exempt ag producers from those regulations.

Nelson thinks the FUELS ACT has a good chance of passage in the Senate.

Nelson says if Fischer’s legislation is enacted it could save Nebraska farmers and ranchers thousands of dollars in unneeded facility upgrades and potentially thousand more in regulatory paperwork requirements.
