Nebraska Ethanol Plants Struggling Economically But No Shutdowns Yet

Nebraska Ethanol Plants Struggling Economically But No Shutdowns Yet

The ethanol industry remains under pressure from low prices, refinery waivers and now the COVID-19 pandemic. Nebraska Ethanol Board Administrator Roger Berry says several plants in Nebraska are cutting back production but there’s been no official shutdown of any of them yet.

He says Nebraska’s ethanol facilities are losing money at a rapid pace.

Berry says one positive for the ethanol industry is that the Trump administration has decided not to appeal the 10th Circuit Court decision on the small refinery waivers.

Berry says the ethanol industry is also working with the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms on an exemption that would allow licensing for ethanol to be used in hand sanitizers.
