Opponents of the death penalty in Nebraska have gone to court, seeking to throw out the 166-Thousand signatures gathered to force a public vote on capital punishment.
The group, Nebraskans for Public Safety, claims in a lawsuit the referendum petition effort failed to follow state law by not listing Governor Pete Ricketts as a sponsor.
Lawyer Alan Peterson of Lincoln says it’s a fatal flaw. . .
Peterson says he expects the courts to take up the measure quickly. . .
The petition drive gathered well over the number of signatures needed to place the issue on the November ballot next year. The verification process continues to see if enough signatures stand up to prevent the repeal of the death penalty from taking effect.
