Row crops are slightly behind in Nebraska, but condition scores indicate there is still good yield potential. USDA’s Crop Progress Report showed corn emergence at 95-percent of normal, but the crop is rated 77-percent good to excellent. Soybean emergence is at 85-percent verses the average of 96-percent with a good to excellent rating of 75-percent.
Agronomist Brittany Bolte with Yield Plus Agronomics of Bassett says the crop still has good yield potential, especially considering the tough spring.
She says farmers in Nebraska surprisingly had much less prevented plant than other areas of the corn belt, despite the weather-related disasters they faced this spring.
Bolte says growing degree units are lagging and crop development is 10 days to two weeks behind, but the crop should catch up as many farmers planted earlier season corn and soybeans.
She says, however, for the crops to make it to maturity they will need a normal frost date.
