Buffalo County is now the first county in Nebraska to receive 9-1-1 text messages through all available cell phone companies.

In January, 911 emergency dispatch centers in Buffalo and Douglas counties began accepting text messages from Sprint and Verizon customers with texting plans. Messages are accepted from people in situations in which it otherwise would be dangerous to call, such as a domestic-violence victim hiding from an assailant.
The service involving all cell phone companies in Buffalo County was brought online last Thursday, making it the only 911 center in the state to provide both voice and text messages to 911. Since text to 911 was implemented, the Buffalo County, 911 center has received five text messages. Douglas County continues to work with cell phone providers to eventually offer the same text and voice capabilities.
