Environmental groups are suing the Environmental Protection Agency over their decision to reapprove atrazine. The groups are claiming atrazine is linked to birth defects and cancer in humans. Nebraska Corn Grower’s Association President Dan Nerud says those groups arguments are baseless as atrazine has been thoroughly studied and been found to be safe. He says it’s an important weed control tool for farmers.
He says the EPA followed sound science before approving and reapproving atrazine.
Nerud says atrazine is not only safe, but it’s not costly and is beneficial for producers and consumers in the long run.
The groups challenging the reapproval of atrazine contend the EPA failed in its legal duty to ensure the pesticide would not cause unreasonable harm to public health and the environment.
