Nebraska lawmakers have advanced to final round a six-cent increase in the state gas tax.
Speaker Galen Hadley of Kearney tells colleagues the tax increase will provide the money needed to fix deteriorating roads and bridges.
Senator Kate Bolz of Lincoln opposes the move, saying the legislature missed a chance to catch-up on road and bridge work.
The bill would raise the gas tax by six cents over four years, bringing the total generated by the gas tax to approximately $76 Million annually.
Governor Pete Ricketts issued a statement, “condemning” the action by the legislature, and promising a veto if it passes.
