A bill that would change how votes are counted in Presidential races is becoming an issue in the Nebraska legislature.

Senator Tyson Larson of O’Neill has made LB 1058 his priority bill.

Larson says under the electoral college, small states like Nebraska get ignored in national elections…

Larson says it would have economic benefits…

Larson says the bill would join Nebraska to the National Popular Vote compact…

So far, nine states and the District of Columbia have joined the compact.

Governor Dave Heineman and Secretary of State John Gale are opposing the bill. Heineman says under the terms of the compact, the state’s electoral votes could go to a candidate that did not win the state.

The bill will be up for floor debate this week, or next.
