A coalition for farm and urban Nebraskans is launching a petition drive to allow a vote on a plan to provide an estimated $1.1 billion in annual property tax relief. Nebraska State Senator Steve Erdman is working with the group and says he’ll introduce a bill in the next Unicameral that has the same wording as the petition.

He says the plan combines the Governor’s goal of income tax relief, along with what several ag and business groups want, which is property tax relief.

Erdman says several steps must be taken secure the $1.1 billion that’s needed for tax relief. He says the legislature must make cuts to the overall budget and roll back some sales tax exemptions.

85,000 signatures must be submitted to the Nebraska Secretary of State by July of 2018 to get the petition on the ballot that November.
