A new coalition is calling on Nebraska to rely less on property taxes to fund public schools.

Several groups have joined Nebraskans United for Property Tax Reform and Education.

Nebraska Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson says farmers and ranchers carry too much of the burden to fund public education. . .

Nebraska Farmers Union President John Hansen says there is a reason farm and education groups would come together on this issue. . .

The group says the state needs a more fair and balanced tax system to fund public schools. It claims that while Nebraskans pay one of the highest property tax rates in the nation, it ranks 49th in public education funding.
