The Nebraska Vote No 369 coalition is asking voters in the 15 county service area of the state to vote against a $ 369 million bond issue for renovations at Southeast Community College. The coalition is made up of Former Governor Dave Heineman, three state Senators, three Nebraska Agricultural groups and the Lincoln Independent Business Association. Nebraska Farm Bureau Board Director Terry Keebler says if the bond issue passes it’ll mean a significant increase in property taxes.
Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association Board member Dick Hollman says it was a tough decision to oppose the bond issue because SCC has a strong ag program. He says however the impact on already high property taxes was a major factor leading to their opposition.
Dick Lien, chairman of the Lincoln Independent Business Association says the scope of the SCC project is much too large and way to expensive, so they’re also opposing the measure.
The coalition recommends that Southeast Community College needs to prioritize their projects and look at other avenues for raising funds rather than relying on this bond measure.
