The Nebraskans United for Property Tax Reform and Education are supporting LB 314. The measure sponsored by Senator Tom Briese of Albion would provide more than $700 million in property tax relief while protecting essential public services for the elderly, education, health care and roads. Coalition member Kevin Cooksley, President of the Nebraska State Grange, says they’ve been working on this bill for some time.
He says their goal is to get property tax relief combined with proper funding for education.
The Nebraska Farm Bureau is also part of the coalition. State Director of Government Relations Ansley Mick says they’re supporting LB 314, but are also watching other property tax relief measures coming this session.
LB 314 also calls for adding $468 million to the property tax credit fund bringing that total to $692 million. It would increase the state sales tax by a half a cent and the tax on cigarettes and alcohol.
