Nebraska can get by with fewer units of local government, according to the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce.
Vice President Jamie Karl says compared to New Mexico, which has a similar population, Nebraska has 60 more counties.
Karl says allowing voluntary mergers is one way to shrink government.
Karl says now it seems more people are in favor of government mergers, especially counties.
He points to New Mexico and South Dakota, which are similar in population or area, as states with fewer counties.
