An executive order issued by President Donald Trump to suspend refugee arrivals could hurt meatpacking companies. The executive order would cut the number of refugees allowed into the U.S. in half to 50,000. Nebraska Cattlemen Association President Troy Stowater says the move is a bit of a concern as his industry depends on processing and labor is especially needed now at those plants with recent facility expansions.

He says while it is a concern, it’s too early in the process to be alarmed.

Stowater is hoping Congress will be able to help the solve the immigration problem by passing reform legislation. He says while it may seem the President is acting quickly on the immigration issue, at least he’s taking some kind of action and isn’t afraid to do what he believes in.

Meatpackers often turn to immigrant labor to fill their needs because most Americans are unwilling to perform those jobs.
