America’s cattle producers have been waiting for the Trump administration to get moving on trade agreements. A recent win happened this week when the European Union approved an earlier deal that allows the U.S. a larger share of the 45,000 ton hormone free beef tariff rate quota into the E.U. Nebraska Cattlemen Association President Mike Drinnen says that’s a big win as that’s been a tough barrier to overcome.
He says to build on the E.U. trade win, it’s critical the U.S. now ratify the USMCA deal with Canada and Mexico and then get going completing a pact with Japan.
Drinnen says getting USMCA completed will help with trade deals with other countries like Japan and even an FTA with the European Union.
The hormone free tariff rate quota was put together in the wake of the U.S. winning several WTO challenges on the E.U.s ban on imports of beef produced with growth hormones.
