Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb has announced his resignation and will leaving at the end of the month. Nebraska Cattlemen Association Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs Jessica Herrmann says that’s a concern because FDA and USDA have joint authority over regulating meat labeling. She says they’d rather have USDA handle all the regulations.

She says Gottlieb has been good to work with and whoever replaces him needs to make sure FDA enforces any meat labeling regulation that’s approved.

Herrmann says Nebraska Cattlemen Association members want meat labeled properly and regulations on it passed at both the federal and state levels. She says they’re backing LB 594, a measure introduced in the Unicameral to address the meat labeling issue in Nebraska.

Herrmann says LB 594 has had one hearing so far and is currently in the Agriculture Committee. She says that type of truth in labeling legislation needs to be passed.
