Nebraska Cattlemen Association members are supporting a pair of measures in the Unicameral to reduce property taxes.  Cattlemen’s Legislative Director Laura Field says they’re backing bills which are almost identical from Senators Beau McCoy and Tom Hansen.

Field says they’re working not just for property tax relief but for an overhaul of the state’s tax system in order to bring more fairness for everyone.

Field says opposition to McCoy’s and Hansen’s legislation has come from educational groups and county governments. They’re claiming schools would lose $ 68.2 million in tax revenue under the two bills while counties would lose $ 21.9 million. Field says despite that, property tax relief must be achieved.

Both bills have been heard in committee and are awaiting further action.
