Things are looking bleaker for possible passage of the Trans Pacific Partnership this year. The deal may not even come up for a vote as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says the current agreement has some serious flaws and won’t be acted upon this year. Despite that, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association President Barb Cooksley says her group isn’t giving up on trying to get TPP passed.
She says TPP provides cattle producers an opportunity to capture some value added markets with their beef.
Majority leader McConnell says while TPP won’t pass in its current form, it could pass as early as next year with some changes when the new administration takes over. Cooksley says making any changes to the TPP won’t be agreed to from member countries.
Not only is the Senate Majority leader unlikely to bring TPP up, but House Speaker Paul Ryan says there’s not enough votes in the House to pass the measure. In addition both Presidential Candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have come out against the deal.
