The Coalition for a Prosperous America wants North American Free Trade Agreement negotiators to restore U.S. mandatory country of origin labeling in their pact. Nebraska Cattlemen Association Executive Director Pete McClymont says his group backs voluntary COOL but opposes a mandatory system.

Part of the reason CPA officials want mandatory COOL restored is to ensure consumers they can get the information they desire on the products they purchase and that it’s the safest product available. McClymont says the U.S. already has the safest food in the world.

He is hopeful negotiators complete the NAFTA deal as soon as possible as Mexico and Canada are two important customers of U.S beef.

McClymont says it’s encouraging U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer is hoping to get NAFTA completed by the end of this month or early next month.
