The leader of the Nebraska Cattlemen Association says his group opposes the Farm System Reform Act legislation introduced by New Jersey Senator Cory Booker. The measure calls for a moratorium on the construction of confined animal feeding operations or CAFOs by 2040. President Ken Herz says curtailing the development of CAFOS would mean higher costs for consumers and jeopardize food safety.
He’s says they’re also against reinstating Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling in the bill, which would invite retaliation from global customers.
Herz says the one positive is the measure reforms price reporting and requires packers buy half their inventory on a negotiated basis in the spot market.
Herz says despite that component, his group opposes the legislation.
