A bill (LB 68) that passed on the first round of debate regarding gun laws in Nebraska is done for the session but will likely resurface again next year. The bill would restrict cities and towns from implementing stricter limits on guns that what state law allows. The hurdles were in Omaha regarding the handgun registration law and in Lincoln where lawmakers do not want guns brought into the Pinnacle Bank Arena. Chris Kopacki is a lobbyist in Nebraska for the NRA and says they are in the process of ironing out those details.
Kopacki says there were news articles earlier this week that implied that the bill was dead for good. He says that is not the case and when the Legislature picks up in January they will continue to move forward.
In Omaha handguns must be registered and this bill would put an end to that. In Lincoln, lawmakers do not want guns allowed in the Pinnacle Bank Arena. Kopacki says they plan to have meetings with Lincoln law enforcement to hear their concerns in the months ahead.
