The alfalfa crop is off to a good start across Nebraska. University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension Forage Specialist Bruce Anderson says alfalfa stands overwintered well and the crop development stage for the first cutting is average to slightly ahead of normal.
He says if the weather cooperates and brings some warmer temperatures and sunshine the prospects for a high yielding alfalfa crop are promising.
Anderson expects the alfalfa harvest for the first cutting to get under way in the next couple of weeks.
Anderson says there has been no major insect or disease pressure with the alfalfa crop so far this spring, just a few minor reports of aphids and weevils.
