President Joe Biden upon taking office this week issued some executive orders, one being to reject the permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline project. Neligh area farmer Art Tanderup has been battling the pipeline for several years and is pleased with the President’s move to reject the project. He says Keystone XL if allowed to progress would cause irreparable agriculture damage as well as damage to the environment.
Nebraska Farm Bureau President Mark McHargue is disappointed with the executive action, saying it means lost jobs and lost tax revenue.
Tanderup is hopeful President Biden will take more regulatory steps to protect agriculture and the environment against any future projects whether it be pipeline or others that could cause damage.
Besides opposition from some Nebraska farmers to Keystone XL, Dakota Rural Action also is pleased with the President’s Executive order revoking the permit. DRA officials say it’ s good this dangerous tar sands pipeline was stopped from threatening the nation’s land, water and communities.
