Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer has introduced the Real Meat Act, which stands for Real Marketing Edible Artificially Truthful meat act in the Senate. Both Nebraska Cattlemen and Farm Bureau support the measure. Cattlemen Vice President of Legal and Regulatory Affairs Jessica Herrmann says the bill puts into federal law the definition of meat for labeling purposes.

She says the legislation addresses product misbranding and requires the Food and Drug Administration and the USDA to enforce the labeling law.

Herrmann says because there is no state meat inspection in Nebraska, the REAL MEAT Act is badly needed.

Herrmann says Fischer’s bill is a companion measure to one already introduced in the House. Nebraska Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson says the Real MEAT Act provides additional transparency to consumers and restores labeling integrity for plant based products.
