This week through April 2, Nebraska’s agricultural checkoff groups are teaming up to focus on grain bin safety during their fifth annual Stand Up 4 Grain Safety Week. Nebraska Sorghum Board Executive Director Nate Blum says because on farm grain storage is the on rise, the potential for accidents around and in those grain bins increases.
He says there are several sources for safety tips and one can start with their local extension office.
Blum says besides the grain bins themselves, producers must be extremely cautious around the machinery they’re using, especially the augers so you don’t get caught in a moving part.
Some of the tips the ag groups are putting out this week include to make sure and use a pole from outside the bin to break up grain bridges, never enter a grain bin unless absolutely necessary and if you must go in, use a body harness secured to the outside of the bin. And use hand signals to communicate and make sure everyone you’re working with knows what those signals are.
