Nebraska Ag Extension Researching Industrial Hemp

The Nebraska legislature earlier this year joined forty some other states and legalized the production of industrial hemp.

The University of Nebraska has been researching hemp production for several years. Extension Agronomy Professor Ismail Dweikat says they started with some varieties from Canada, which didn’t do so well farther south…

Dweikat says they have been looking at a native plant that has been growing in Nebraska for quite some time….

Dweikat says it will take some time to develop the right plants and growing conditions….

While hemp production has been legalized in some states, the US Department of Agriculture has not yet finalized rules needed for production and transportation.
