A coalition of Nebraska farm groups, including the State Farm Bureau, are supporting legislation sponsored by Senator Mike Groene of North Platte. Farm Bureau Senior Economist Jay Rempe says LB 640 increases state aid to education while providing property tax relief.

He says the property tax cap called for in the legislation could be increased down the road which would provide even more property tax relief.

Rempe says recent data shows the increase in property taxes in Nebraska over the past decade has reached high enough levels that this legislation is badly needed.

Besides the Nebraska Ag Coalition, the Nebraska Rural Community Schools Association also backs the measure. Another group, the Greater Nebraska Schools Association opposes the bill.
