Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson is backing a legislative proposal to fight prescription drug abuse.
He says the state is one of two that does not have a mandatory prescription monitoring program.

Peterson also joined 35 other attorneys general to ask the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to adopt proposed guidelines for prescribing pain killers, such as morphine and codeine….

Peterson says some doctors over-prescribe the highly addictive drugs, while others shy away from giving them to patients…

Peterson says doctors do not have to follow the guidelines, but he believes the standards will help others.
