Nebraska Farmers Union members are opposing LB 176, the measure that would allow Nebraska packers to own pigs. Farmers Union President John Hansen says that measure is due up for discussion this week. He says if the bill is adopted it will create a conflict with the rule that bans Nebraska beef packers from owning livestock.
He says Nebraska already has enough owners of livestock and adding more will just lessen the economic benefits for them.
Hansen says if LB 176 is approved it will hurt independent pork producers.
Hansen doesn’t think it’s necessary for Smithfield who is already the world’s and nation’s largest hog producer and processor to be able to own even more hogs. And he says that would be the end result if LB 176 is passed.
