Hartington, Nebraska farmer Martin Kleinschmit was among 12 producers honored nationally as a Champion for Sustainable and Climate Smart Agriculture. Ceremonies took place at the White House on Monday. Kleinschmit says was recognized for his organic grain and grass fed beef production which maintains natural fertility and fosters carbon sequestration. He says making the shift didn’t happen overnight.
Kleinschmit credits the Center for Rural Affairs for getting he and other farmers started and mentoring them through the transition to organic. He says more than 60,000 Nebraska acres are now certified in the USDA organic program.
He says organic farming and niche markets like grass fed beef provide a great way for younger producers to get into the business.
In an effort to conserve the use of fossil fuels, Kleinschmit owns and manages Marlin Wind and Solar, LLC.
