Nebraska farmers need to be aware of recent changes in state law regarding how they need to protect their interests when selling or storing grain. Nebraska Farm Bureau Vice President of Government Relations, Jay Rempe says the Grain Protection Law now states that once grain is delivered, farmers only have 15 days to demand payment. He says the 15 day notification also effects stored grain.
Rempe says by not demanding payment right away, farmers are in the position of giving an unsecured loan.
This change in Nebraska state law actually went into effect the end of August however with producers busy with harvest, it’s something that’s easy to overlook. Rempe says if farmers have any questions they can call the Farm Bureau office or the State Public Service Commission or check with their attorney.
