This week the Nebraska State Ag Committee held a hearing on a measure allowing voters to decide whether to include the right to farm and ranch in the state constitution. The State Cattlemen’s Association supports the measure, while Nebraska Farmers Union opposes it. Nebraska Farm Bureau’s Vice President of Government Relations Bruce Rieker says they want to further study the issue.
He says the right to farm and ranch is already included in state law and leaving it there is the best thing to do.
Rieker expects some type of action on the proposed legislation sometime next week.
Proponents of the measure want the right to farm and ranch clause in the constitution to protect against animal activists that are looking to destroy animal agriculture.
