Nebraska Farm Bureau members are asking state Senators to pass property tax relief before the 2016 session ends. They say it’s a more urgent priority than approving a Right to Farm measure and putting it in the state constitution. Jeff Metz is President of the Morrill County Farm Bureau and also serves on the county commission. He says property taxes, which have gone up 176 percent over the past ten years, are the most critical issue lawmakers must deal with.
He says tax relief, in the form of tax credits, was approved last session but it isn’t enough to ease the tax burden.
Metz says there needs to be an alternative way to fund education rather than relying solely on property taxes, which makes it a multifaceted problem.
Metz says his group wants lawmakers to know that doing nothing about property taxes is not an option.
